What Portuguese looks like in the first 30 days
- Obrigado or obrigada (Day 1) agrees with you, the speaker: a man always says obrigado and a woman always says obrigada.
- The nasal ão has no English equivalent: não, no (Day 3), and o cartão, the card (Day 8).
- lh and nh are ly and ny: o filho, the son (Day 11), and vermelho, red (Day 13); uma caipirinha (Day 5).
- Brazilian words throughout: o ônibus, the bus (Day 15), is autocarro in Portugal.

Is Portuguese similar to Spanish?

They are chosen by how often you will actually meet them, so the course opens with greetings & introductions, numbers & counting, essential courtesy rather than colors and animals. Earlier days come back at widening intervals: day 1 is revisited by days 2, 3, 4, 7 and 8, and its ten words are split across those revisits, so each one returns once or twice.

What should I learn first in Portuguese?
The words you will need in the first five minutes of any conversation, in this order: greetings & introductions, numbers & counting, essential courtesy, about yourself. Day 1 is: say hello, give your name, and thank someone correctly. Many courses open with colors and animals instead; those are easy to teach and rarely the thing you need to say first.
