Why learn Hindi in 2026?
Hindi is in the US Foreign Service Institute's Category III, at about 44 weeks of training (1,012 class hours) to reach general professional proficiency. It belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European family, so it is a distant relative of English.
Devanagari is genuinely phonetic — one character, one sound — and every word in the course is written in it with a transliteration beside it. Two distinctions change meaning and are marked throughout: aspiration, because क and ख are different letters, and the retroflex sounds made with the tongue curled back.
The course uses the polite आप form a visitor should use with everyone. Where a man and a woman say a verb differently, the form in the course is the one a man uses, so a woman changes the ending: बोलता हूँ becomes बोलती हूँ.

There is no separate script course. Every word is in Devanagari with a transliteration beside it — aspirated letters written with an h, retroflex sounds with a dot below — so you read the script as you learn the words.

What Hindi looks like in the first 30 days
- Aspiration is a real puff of air, and it changes the word: छह (chhah), six (Day 2), and फिर मिलेंगे (phir milenge), see you again (Day 1), where ph is an aspirated p, not an f.
- Retroflex sounds are written with a dot below: मैं ठीक हूँ (maiṅ ṭhīk hūṅ), I am fine (Day 1).
- The polite आप (āp) for everyone, from Day 4. तुम is for friends and तू for children and intimates, and reaching for them early is the mistake that offends.
- Verbs carry the speaker's gender (Day 4): a man says मैं थोड़ी हिंदी बोलता हूँ, I speak a little Hindi, and a woman says बोलती हूँ.
- One word for yesterday and tomorrow: कल (kal), on Day 9. The verb tense tells you which.

And what it is not: This is the foundation of CEFR A1, not the whole of it, and not conversational fluency. It teaches the polite आप register, in Devanagari with transliteration. Thirty days at fifteen minutes a day is about 7 hours, and CEFR A1 is commonly estimated at 80–100 guided hours. We would rather say that than sell you a month to fluency.

Do I need to learn the Devanagari script?
It is worth learning early, because it is phonetic: once you know it, you can pronounce any Hindi word. There is no separate Devanagari course on KindLearn — every word is shown in Devanagari with a transliteration beside it, so you read the script as you learn the words.
How similar is Hindi to other languages?
Hindi belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European family, so it is a distant relative of English. Everyday spoken Hindi and Urdu are very close; the scripts differ — Devanagari for Hindi, Perso-Arabic for Urdu.
Why do men and women say Hindi verbs differently?
Gender runs through Hindi grammar, and the verb agrees with the speaker. A man says मैं… में रहता हूँ, I live in…, and a woman says रहती हूँ (Day 4). The course teaches the form a man uses, so a woman changes -ता to -ती.
Can children learn Hindi on KindLearn?

They are chosen by how often you will actually meet them, so the course opens with greetings & introductions, numbers & counting, essential courtesy rather than colors and animals. Earlier days come back at widening intervals: day 1 is revisited by days 2, 3, 4, 7 and 8, and its ten words are split across those revisits, so each one returns once or twice.

The first 30 days are the easiest part of that curve, which is why a short structured start is worth more than it sounds.
What should I learn first in Hindi?
The words you will need in the first five minutes of any conversation, in this order: greetings & introductions, numbers & counting, essential courtesy, about yourself. Day 1 is: say hello, give your name, and thank someone. Many courses open with colors and animals instead; those are easy to teach and rarely the thing you need to say first.
